When the missionaries first arrive in Mbanta Nwoye becomes mesmerized by their preaching. Nwoye, who has decided to take up the Christian life of the white men, declares to Obierika that he has disowned his father. It was previously established that Okonkwo and Nwoye have had a rather difficult relationship, but this forceful rejection seems to be a big step in the unravelling of Okonkwo's glory.
